My First Pics Of Sammy's D's In Atlantic City — Courtesy Of Mom And Dad

on

Between the year I was born and the day, 23 years later, when I left New Jersey, the Garden State was hardly a bastion of fine dining.  My grandmother made great meatballs, and growing up in South Jersey, I had great cheese steaks.  But overall, it wasn’t a state known for gourmet cuisine. It’s amazing how things have changed.  Now, when I go visit my parents outside of Atlantic City, I have a hell of a lot of culinary choices.  In fact, because I visit so rarely, I sometimes have to send my parents out to investigate for me – and let them enjoy the VIP status I take for granted.  (It’s the least I can do to make up for them having to put up with me all these years.)  So here, courtesy of my mom and dad, are the first pictures I have to offer of Sammy D’s in Harrah’s Atlantic City.

For those of you who don’t know Sammy D (aka Sam DeMarco), he’s a great friend of mine. In the 90s he was a pioneer of gourmet comfort food at First in the East Village.  I avoided that joint, since I resented him bringing yuppies into “my” neighborhood.  But I later fell in love with his food at First Food and Bar in The Palazzo.  Hell, he even let me bartend there when I was down on my luck, with disastrous results (read about it here).

If you’re on the east coast – this is a restaurant you want to visit.  Here are pictures.
